OH MY ZOD!!!

OK, I love drawing Superman. I have ever since I could hold a pencil.I was inspired to do this piece after recently watching the Donner cut of Superman 2. Which I actually did think was stronger in a lot of ways than the original non-Donner version . Ok , except for the turning back time thing at the end damnit. The first two movies were so rad ,and Christopher Reeve is such an amazing Superman. I tottaly believed him as that character when I was a kid. I also like Alex Ross's Superman , where he looks like an older burly man. Whatever , Expect to see more Superman pieces on this blog in the near future. I'm a nerd.

Hey, thank you so much for the coments everyone. I'm glad there are allot of other nerds out there.

A couple of you comented on the color. Thanks alot. I was really trying to pull from the feel of the movies. The yellowish blue green feel of the skys and the blue green yellows of the suit. And I love the Orangish red feel of the cape , boots , pants and S"" in the movies . I just did my best to mix some colors that had that feel . Then I took some liberties within that pallette.

And as for the composition.... Thats tottaly why I wanted to do with this peice. Composing with that cape is so fun. Its limitless how many interesting ways you can use that cape to break up the picture plane. It can look dynamic or calm . In some cases it can be dynamic while Superman is calm. Whatever.... And then using the three Kryptonian fugitives in there black suits as a compositional accent against that sky was just a given.

Thank you so much everybody. I love nerding out with th blog comunity.

Nerd on. This is a lovely piece... with a certain delicacy to the character that you often don't see in Superman. And it's a rare treat to get your insight on it.

For a totally different story on flying: I'm currently reading Mr Vertigo by Paul Auster. You might enjoy it if you havn't read it already. ~Arna

what??? "orangish red feel of the cape"??? All i'm thinking about is...did Superman copy the Spartans or did the Spartans copy Superman with the red capes? i saw the movies- someone's a copycat. :)

Nice piece, Shane. Weird, I don't know if I started something or if I just caught the wave.. probably the latter, but a few months ago I did a Superman design, then I start seeing Superman on everyones blog. I guess in the wake of the Donner cut and Superman Returns there's major Superman withdrawel on the rise haha. This is a really solid piece man. Great stuff.
